S is for September, Skip Bin Hire and Sustainability

Since we find ourselves in the month of September - we would like to talk about Skip Bin Hire and Sustainability.

If you are managing a Factory, a warehouse, a shopping centre or any other commercial premises, including schools, religious institutions  or offices - chances are - you are due for regular clean outs of the premises.  It might mean different things for different industries:
  • for Warehouses - might be a disposal of old pallets, outdated equipment, packaging
  • for schools it might be getting rid of old, broken or unsafe furniture, replacement with a new, disposal of packing and old equipment
  • for factories it might mean disposal of the prescribed waste, machinery, outdated equipment
  • for business with an end of lease it might mean all sorts of waste, inclusive but not limited to: fixtures and fittings, furniture, equipment, e-waste, recyclables and the like.
Big Clean Ups are usually associated with hiring a Skip Bin or a Dumpster as our brothers in USA like to call it :-).  For a lot of larger corporations, especially with Quality Certifications, even clean-up events are regulated and waste should be disposed of responsibly in accordance with the Sustainability principles.

Hence - seeking association with the Skip Bin Hire Companies, which are committed to the Sustainability Practices, inclusive but not limited to:

  • being able to provide bins or find other solutions for various streams of waste, such as:
    • General Waste
    • Recyclable Waste
    • Green Waste
    • Paper
    • Metal
    • Asbestos and other prescribed waste
  • being able to divert 85+% of waste away from Landfill, which usually implies that they need to have their own Waste Transfer Station, where all the rubbish will be separated into various categories and then each waste stream is taken furthe to processing to specialized recycling centres.
Sustainability during clean ups can be adhered to in many ways, one of the simplest things to consider is what cleaning materials and / or chemicals are being used during a clean up?  Companies, which are committed to the environmental preservation and sustainablity principles are opting to use products, which are are environmentally friendly, reduce the wastage of water and energy and limit chemicals discharged into the environment.

Further, when planning your big clean up event, it is recommended to source biodegradable, sustainable, and environmentally preferable products as well as implementing strategies that ensure there are no chemical waste, reduced energy consumption and paperless communications, as a starting point.  An example of the environmentally friendly cleaning products choice is Green chemicals, which include but not limited to: Bio + Green Crystals and Solucare, which are waste free, not harmful to humans or the environment.

For companies and organisations which are required to maintain clean environment on a daily basis, such as hospitals and food manufacturers, not to mention electronics manufacturing - choosing the right, environmentally friendly chemicals with minimum odors and minimum use of harsh ingredients is paramount.

Schools Australia wide are very serious about sustainability, which is woven across it's many disciplines from educating students about carbon emissions, to using correct bins for various types of waste, to teaching them about green living, gardening, sustainable foods and of cause environmentally friendly clean ups.  A couple of suggestions for Schools here:
  • involve your students in planning environmentally freindly events and clean ups
  • think of reducing waste in the first instance, by using products, which are biodegrable and recyclable
  • think of only two waste streams when planning an event, such as: landfill and recyclable.
  • Label your bins accordingly, even put pictures of various waste examples, which are go to into each bin
  • think of collecting plastic separately and finding a local government or commercial company, which can collect your school plastic for FREE or otherwise provide a local drop off point
  • if space on the school grounds permits - have a constant "on site" skip bin or a few there, for a various waste type, so that they can be emptied on a regular basis and you don't have to double handle the waste
In Summary - let's make the month of September a Sustainable One, backed up by Sustainable Practices in your Business or Work Place and in case of a major clean up, selecting a Sustainable Skip Bin Hire company to align with your values and goals!

Skip Bin Hire for Soil or Dirt in Melbourne Australia

As most of the Melbournians - be it a Builder / Renovator / Concreter or a Swimming Pool Company - we are all looking for ways to minimise our cost of waste or rubbish removal from our building projects.

One of the commonly disposed of waste types in Melbourne during such projects is soil or dirt.  There are various types of dirt, depending on the project, such as:
  • Dirt with some green waste and stones - as part of the landscaping project, would call for a Mixed Heavy type of Bin Hire
  • Dirt from the excavation of Driveway - would be a mixture of Concrete and Soil - and would also be suitable for a reduced priced Skip Bin for Concrete and Soil recyclable Waste
  • Dirt from deep excavation - such as digging for a swimming pool - will qualify for a 100% soil bin, which is a discounted price from the mixed heavy waste types.
Dirt - especially wet dirt after some rains - will be very dense and very heavy, hence - when choosing a bin hire company - be sure to enquire whether there is an additional charge at the end of hire for extra weight.

Aim to find an all-inclusive up-front price for bin hire for Dirt / Soil, regardless of the weight, so that there are no hidden surprises on the pickup of the bin.

Generally, bins for Soil / Dirt would be offered from 2 cubic meters up to 6 or 8 cubic meters.  Only a few companies in Melbourne would have powerful enough trucks to lift up to 10 or 12 cubic meters bin of soil.

One has to be careful when loading the bin - as there is a significant difference of how much you can fit into a bin if manually filling it with wheelbarrows or loading it with a bob cat or an excavator.  The danger of loading it with an excavator  and compacting the soil in the bin can result in seriously overloading the bin (weight wise) and making it too heavy for the truck to lift.  Prior to hiring a bin - enquire what is the maximum weight the truck is able to lift, thus it will help you to estimate whether you can compact the soil or not.

As soil is a recyclable material in Australia - you should always expect to pay LESS for Soil / Dirt than you would pay for a Mixed Heavy Builders Waste, which is normally a combination of: Soil / bricks / Concrete / Clay and sometimes even General Waste.

Companies, which have their own waste transfer station - would be most suited to provide best prices for Skip Bin Hire for Soil, as they have processes to screen and clean this soil and then take it to a soil processing facility, thus diverting it from landfill.

For any Skip Bin Hire questions in Melbourne, Australia - please don't hesitate to post your comments and we'll endevour to answer them promptly.

We wish you in finding the best Bin Hire Company to assist you with your Waste Management and in particular Soil Disposal.

Builders Vs Circus Jugglers

Have you ever wondered how kids might perceive builders?

On our recent visit to the Highett Vic site, where we supply Skip Bins for a Mak Construction & Design Project - we have observed how brick layers were working.

It was noted by our kids that there are a lot of similarities between the builders and the circus pro's, including Jugglers, Tight Rope and many more.  They are more similar than not:

  • both are not afraid of heights
  • strong, fit and flexible
  • great jugglers
  • can walk the tight rope or timber plank, suspended in the air
  • can climb high leathers
  • both are fascinating to watch ;-)

Rubbish Removal Services in Melbourne Australia

In the booming Construction Industry in Australia and Melbourne in particular - Rubbish Removal Services are becoming almost as essentials as oxygen.

As we drive through the streets of Melbourne - being St Kilda, Highett, Bayside, Melbourne CBD, the leafy suburbs of Hawthorn, Glen Iris or the beautiful Mornington Peninsula - we see construction sites popping up left right and centre.  The first thing that grabs our attention is whether the site is clean and organised or whether it's over-flowing with rubbish.

Controlling the waste on the Building / Construction Site  - not only to keep the space clean and safe for the workers and to have available space to store the building materials but also to comply with the strict City Council and EPA regulations - is becoming one of the biggest head aches for the Site Managers.

Having a proper system for managing a construction or building waste in an economical, logical and consistent way can mean the difference between a smooth flow of the project, injury prevention, EPA compliance and prevention of the local residents complaints and having a disorganized, messy site, running out of necessary space and attracting an unnecessary attention from the regulating bodies and the residents.

While there are various methods of waste management on building sites from cages to skip bins and manual labourers, the cost of such services, together with consistency and quality of service can differ greatly from company to company.

Need A Skip Now -  Melbourne's trusted Skip Bin Hire company is offering all of the above services, tailored specifically for each building / construction or demolition site and is a One Stop Shop, where you can get a Free Site Management Consultation,  a proposal of how to manage your site's rubbish, various sizes of skip bins and hook bins from 2 cubic meters to 31 cubic meters large bins and even an excavator and labourers to clean up large sites.

If you are a builder, landscaper, site manager, demolisher or just working on your renovation project -  consider outsourcing your Rubbish Removal to the professionals and give Need A Skip Now a call on 1300 605 624 for an obligation free discussion.
