WHY DIDN’T THE SKIP DRIVER TAKE AWAY MY BIN?

How many times have you passed a skip bin and have come across an overfilled bin?

Customer will overfill these bins knowing very well that these bins should be filled to the lip and not overflowing. The general rule is if the bin was filled with water you could not overfill it.

Melbourne’s waste services are strictly regulated by the Victorian Government. Therefore it’s not the skip driver being unreasonable when they refuses to pick up the bin or asks the customer to remove some of the load – it’s the law! Road safety laws stipulate that bins cannot be filled higher than the top lip.

Drivers and skip companies are legally bound to not carry unsafe loads and unfortunately many people order smaller skips than they need in order to save a few dollars. Order a larger skip than you think you need because you will always fill it – just don’t go over the lip line! You might end up spending more money on another skip bin. There are clear limit lines on most bins but if not it is no excuse to load 8m3 of waste into a 6m3 bin. Who pays for the extra waste?
